IATSE Local 856
IATSE is a labour union made up of specialty artists, technicians and freelance craft workers across North America. In Manitoba, IATSE Local 856 represents Animal Wrangling, Art, Catering, Construction, Continuity (Script), Costume, Extras Casting, First Aid and Craft Services (FACS), Greens, Grips, Hairstylists, Lighting, Makeup Artists, Paint, Picture Vehicles, Props, Security, Set Decorating, Sound, Special Effects, Transportation. When a production company signs a collective agreement with IATSE 856 they agree to hire IATSE 856 members. When there are no IATSE 856 members available IATSE 856 will provide the production with a list of people permitted to work (permittees).
To apply to be an IATSE 856 permittee:
You must be at least 18 years of age
You will need a current resume
There is a $50 processing fee
Many IATSE Local 856 positions also require a Manitoba Driver’s License

Look at the IATSE Local 856 department qualifications. This will give you an idea of any certificates or specific requirements for a department or position.
Consider that you will probably start in an entry level position
Take Set Orientation and WHMIS courses. They are a requirement, but you have 6 months from your application date to complete these courses. Film Training Manitoba delivers these courses online and in the classroom.
Contact the IATSE Local 856 office (204.953.1100) and they will help you get started with the permittee process
Read the Permittee Information Package and complete the Permittee Application
Once you have been accepted as an IATSE Local 856 Permittee you can keep in contact with the IATSE 856 office and let them know your availability.
If you have never worked on a film set you can get some experience by volunteering on a student or independent project. Contact Winnipeg Film Group for volunteer details.
