“I’ve been editing stuff since I was a kid. I was in business school at the University of Manitoba and I would make promotional videos for the events they had there and edit those. Look for any way you can get involved. It may not feel like you’re making progress, but you probably are.”

“I started out making YouTube videos. YouTube is a massive resource. People are getting into more advanced editing, which has led to this interest in film as a career. Every time I am on a shoot, I turn to my partner and say ‘I can’t believe this is my job.’”

“You can think of it in two ways, you can go the traditional route and climb the ranks on set. Or, you can try putting your name out to production companies or creating your own video business. Sometimes you don’t need to go the traditional route.”

“I have a master’s degree in economics, but it’s not very practical. I’ve learned that there is no direct path. Find something you like and find a way to do that and you’ll find your own path.”

“I started doing video and motion graphics right out of school. I’m a little bit of a jack of all trades. That’s kind of the way that the industry is going. It’s good to be specialized, but you have to be aware of what other people are doing. That’s helped me get to my role.”
