Editing Department

The Editing Department is responsible for the preparation and organization of all post-production elements of the production.

Recommended Skills for working in the Editing Department:

  • Demonstrated interpersonal collaborative and communications skills

  • Patience and attention to detail

A combination of demonstrated skills such as experience with editing software, computer skills, a background in visual or fine arts, filmmaking, photography, editing experience and video training is essential.

+ Supervising Picture Editor

The Supervising Picture Editor is responsible for the preparation and organization of all post-production visual elements of the motion picture. They collaborate with the Director, Producer and Sound Editor to achieve an efficient, effective and economic picture edit of the production.

+ Picture Editor

The Picture Editor arranges a series of visual and aural images into proper sequence and story form.

+ First Assistant Picture Editor

The First Assistant Picture Editor assists the Picture Editor. They supervise the cutting room, coordinate picture assembly, and supervise Assistant Picture Editors and Post Production PAs. They assist the Supervising Picture Editor as assigned.

+ Assistant Picture Editor

The Assistant Picture Editor assists the Picture Editor and First Assistant Picture Editor and may perform any duties in the department as assigned.

+ Post Production PA (Production Assistant)

The Post Production PA is responsible for running errands to editing facilities, helping to prepare paperwork, packing and shipping, making deliveries and pickups and performing office duties.

+ Supervising Sound Editor

The Supervising Sound Editor is responsible for overseeing the post-production audio of the production from the commencement of the sound edit to the completion of the mix.

+ Sound Editor

The Sound Editor is responsible for the coordination and creation of sound effects, the synchronization and assembly of sound effects tracks and the preparation of dialogue tracks for the purpose of re-recording, including the synchronization of post-synchronized dialogue tracks to visual action.

+ First Assistant Sound Editor

The First Assistant Sound Editor re-links and conforms the dialogue, music, sound effects, and/or foley tracks, as well as synchronizing dialogue and ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement).

+ Second Assistant Sound Editor

The Second Assistant Sound Editor assists the First Assistant Sound editor.

+ Trainee Assistant (Sound) Editor

The Trainee Assistant Sound Editor is training as an Assistant Sound Editor. They work under the supervision of the Supervising Sound Editor or Sound Editor
