Construction
The Construction Department is responsible for building sets and for all carpentry work connected with the production.
Recommended Skills for working in the Construction Department:
General understanding and interest in art and design
Ability to plan and communicate an artistic vision within budget
Knowledge of the media production industry
Ability to multitask and problem-solve
Ability to make creative use of materials
A combination of demonstrated skills and experience, the ability to read and interpret drawings, framing, cabinet making, furniture, model making, welding, framing, finishing carpentry (wainscoting, crown moulding, cornice work), ability to read blueprints for layout & material cutting lists, familiarity with jig design and millwork, proficiency in building straight and curved stairs and a working knowledge of equipment in a carpentry shop.
+ Construction Coordinator
The Construction Coordinator is responsible for the construction and installation of the Production Designer’s set designs, in studio and on location, and manages the Construction Department to ensure that work is completed on time and on budget.
+ Construction Foreman/Head Carpenter
The Construction Foreman (or Head Carpenter) supervises the construction of sets as designed by the Production Designer. They will perform the duties of the Construction Coordinator in their absence.
+ Construction Department Assistant
The Construction Department Assistant provides administrative assistance to the department.
+ Lead/Assistant Head/On Set Carpenter
The Lead (or Assistant Head) supervises the crew and makes sure that all tasks are completed on time. The On Set Carpenter (or Standby Carpenter) takes care of the studio or location during the shoot days and can move any fly walls and make minor adaptations to the set as needed.
+ Lead Metal Fabricator
The Lead Metal Fabricator is responsible for construction involving metals for the production.
+ Scenic Metal Fabricator
The Scenic Metal Fabricator creates elements for sets and props using metal.
+ Metal Fabrication Assistant
The Metal Fabrication Assistant helps to create materials for the set made with metal.
+ Sculptor
Using a variety of materials, a Sculptor makes scenic elements, like rocks, and props.
+ Scenic Carpenter
The Scenic Carpenter builds scenic elements without direct supervision as assigned by the Construction Coordinator or Head Carpenter.
+ Carpenter
The Carpenter has a working knowledge of all shop equipment, and the ability to read and interpret drawings. All tasks are performed under supervision of the Head Carpenter.
+ Carpenters Assistant
The Carpenter’s Assistant assists the Head Carpenter in the construction of scenic elements.
+ Labourer
The Labourer performs a variety of tasks, including moving tools, supplies and material and making sure that the work site is clean and organized.
